Kavari Raja

Kavari Raja when he arrived

Our newest member of the family- Kavari Raja is an Indian Elephant of 32 years and was donated by the Indian government to the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy when he was around 22 years old. He is an impressive elephant of 11ft 4in and has huge curving tusks which cross over.  In January 2011 Kavari Raja tripped walking down a hill while carrying food from the forest for the other Temple of the Tooth elephants . Weighing over 4.7 tons, he dislocated his right front leg and came to MEF for treatment. The vets and volunteers at MEF are continually working to ease his discomfort and rehabilitate him as best we can. Around this coming winter Raja will go into “musth” for up to 3 months. Despite his massive size and discomfort, Kavari Raja is very mild mannered, he and his mahout Gune are becoming very popular with volunteers and guests.
