For many years now the Millennium Elephant Foundation has organised after school clubs to teach local children English.
English speaking is a valuable skill to children in Sri Lanka giving them better job prospects for their future.
The classes are run by our volunteers and all ages are welcome. We teach from ages two up to adults in their twenties looking to improve their speaking skills. The after school clubs run on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for one hour. Volunteers are often very daunted by this challenge but it soon becomes one of the most rewarding aspects of the project. Teaching training is not necessary and every new volunteer brings new ideas of how to teach and games to play.
The children are keen to learn and we try to make learning fun with educational games and songs. MEF would one day like to be able to open a learning center where we can store resources, have computers and a proper classroom.
